I've been too busy to notice how time flew by...
In November I shot a clip for a new song of my friend Kaya. It actually depicts the way from my Berlin home to the area around Rheinsberg, where I grew up in the countryside outside of Berlin, so it features a lot of places I have known since I can remember.
In February I edited two research-heavy image film loops for Radio Fritz (rbb). One to be used around the 20th anniversary of the station and one to be used as sideshow entertainment at Fritz presentations.
Researching the material involved a couple of night sessions alone in the TV archive of rbb in Potsdam and going through the VJ archives at Fritz itself. The quality of resolution of the footage varied quite a lot, but I think the Fritz spirit comes across.
In April Stefan Fähler directed a promo clip at Con Men for Berlin event series Gegen as part of their "Gegen Innocence" party. I only provided location, set up and VHS transfer but his work turned out so nice, also thanks to the flowers provided by Mark Colle and the performance of Claudia Kent from the Crime Video "This Party Blows", that I feel it cannot get enough exposure.
Speaking of Crime. The show featuring the visuals mentioned below has travelled on a tour around Europe and have even made it to NYC. Here's a little one shot take of them performing "Other Kids Lives" at Berlin's Südblock that I shot some months ago, that you might like if you like them. Which you should, because they are great.

Sissters' Mika Risiko and Scream Club's Sarah Adorable have teamed up for a new project that involves keyboards and floor toms and from here on you should discover for yourself what it is they are making.
Crime is gearing up for a European trek with Dischord recording act E.D. Sedgwick in November/December and this is a taste of what you are about to see onstage:
No, the girls will not be attending the show bored and undressed, but each song is set to feature an individual video to be projected on Mika and Sarah accompanying the music. Aside from me, clips were directed by Stefan Fähler and Mika; they feature actress Pau Pappel, film maker Ester Martin Bergsmark, dancer Prince William Morris and many more.
"This Party Blows" received its premiere in the shorts section of the Berlin Porn Film Festival in October and will kick off the release of some more music videos based on the visuals of the show.

It all started with the first official music video for the new electronic outfit of Sissters' Mika Risiko called Crime. Together with Mika and Stefan Fähler, we filmed with 5 beautiful undressed girls, being bored and gorgeous. The clip had it's premiere in the shorts section of the 2012 Porn Film Festival Berlin starting October 24, 2012.
Only a few days later I, together with Stefan Fähler and Michael Bauer, had the honor of producing the generic TV interview for the sophomore album "Babel" of Mumford & Sons at the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin. Marcus and Winston were absolutely darling, laughing, telling stories and behaving as if we all (including the team) had been buddies for years. It's always so nice, when musicians are this accessible and we want to congratulate them on what looks likely to be one of those 1 Mio. + worldwide sales debuts, that have become so rare in this day and age.
Right after the shoot with Mumford & Sons we went over to Volkspark Friedrichshain to shoot a clip for up-and-coming band Pickers. They take part in the nationwide battle of the bands "Bundesvision Song Contest" created by TV host and Eurovision alumni Stefan Raab. This clip serves as their introduction on the show, has been broadcast nationwide on the popular show "TV Total" and is being used for promotion leading up to and during the event on September 28, 2012. The guys played their new single acoustic and gave us an insight into their motivation to make music.
Last, but most certainly not least, on September 24 I shot a very intimate gig of UK songbird Ellie Goulding shortly before the release of her new album "Halcyon" at Radio Fritz in Potsdam. It's interesting how she translates the electronic album versions into very soulful live renditions that do not make you miss the sometimes heavily processed and cut-up vocals. Rather they make you realize, what an amazing voice she has underneath all that production.

What is it about August? It happened again. Weird.
This time I've been shooting a short piece on Berlin music duo Anne Haight. This bit was produced as an introductory film to their performance at the New Music Award 2012, given out anually to the most promising newcomer with nominations coming from all of the young public radio stations of Germany, including Fritz, whom they were nominated by.
They showed up with a range of weird instruments including a kalimba and a sansula as is the custom when they play a stage. They played a 15 minute set. They didn't win but should have. Whatever, I'm quite sure they'll find a growing devoted audience in no time, since they're not only talented, but also very charming and fun to be around.
The clip has been used for promotion leading up to the event, was shown at the intial award ceremony at Admiralspalast Berlin on September 9 and was subsequently broadcast on nationwide digital TV channel EinsFestival (ARD) and regional TV station MDR as part of their coverage of the show. - Sep 14, 12

knew back then that we would want to have this in 30 years.

I'm sitting here trying to think of something to explain what you're about to see, should you choose to follow.
Well... there are 3 clips shot in Berlin. ...by brazilian filmmaker Ivi Roberg and me. There's poems. And pictures. And music by Mika Risiko, v.b.d. and Terminal Guitar Trio. Come to think of it, they all are solo projects or side arms of other bands: Sissters, Essenz and Château Laut. Enough name dropping. They have been on exhibition at annual Berlin art festival "48 Stunden Neukölln" at Café Engels or as you could say: in a dark corner of a former bowling alley.

What have people done in this case, back when I was a kid? Would they have released their movie on self-copied VHS alongside a fanzine xeroxed into obscurity? Hm. That does sound kinda good, I must admit.
Oh, yeah... It's been almost two years since "Letztes Jahr im Sommer" ("Last Year in Summer"), the documentary about the Orchestre Miniature in the Park premiered at Kino Babylon in Berlin. Since then I have tried with various partners to put it out on DVD. Alas, we live in the land of the GEMA. So we would have likely ended up spending billions on music rights before anything happened.
Why, you ask? Oh, you should see the movie, I say.
It's packed with tons of cover songs about the sun and the summer: Velvet Underground, Weezer, Tocotronic, Phoebe Kreutz, Jonathan Richman, Claude François: all played through the 20 toy instruments of the band. And that 20-piece toy instrument band tours Paris for a week. Paris, France. In the summer. Playing, sweating, laughing. Scaring chickens, climbing rooftops and floating on rivers. Getting drunk and going home butt-naked. Putting memories for a lifetime into their heads and into those of the people they meet.
It's a lot, I know. That's why I split this up into the 5 days of the tour.
So here it is (drum roll): the premiere of "Last Year in Summer", the former documentary shown in a cinema as an English-subtitled web series. Free to watch!!! For everyone!!! Do I hear bottles popping? Damn right!
If the scope of your computer screen just isn't enough, you know what to do: write me an email and request a screening of the film in your area. I'm serious. The band might definitely come along and play a gig, you know?

One look at the past: At the very end of his successful tour, Marsimoto gave his fans a special treat on April 14, playing to a hundred of them at Fritz' studios. Everybody was supposed to wear green, which colorblind me failed at, of course.
For those not in the know, Marsimoto is the alter ego of German rap star Marteria. And whereas last August Marteria pondered on the eternal question, if the beat or the rhyme was there first, Marsi comes clean on all things green.I could describe how great that intimate gig was, but the little piece I shot should be able to get that across by itself.One look to the future: In a month that seems to be filled with people I shot before, I worked with the guys from Essenz on the teaser to their new album "Mundus Numen". It's quite a simple little bit and more about a sonic preview than flashy images, but because of that well worth checking out. - Feb 12, 12
Fresh off their support for up-and-coming Brooklyn act Friends comes the first music video for Berlin's Sissters.
Three very relaxed shoots resulted in a two week tour de force of editing. Often working frame-by-frame and constantly checking the results made Stefan Fähler and me glad we're not epileptic. I think it's safe to assume the result wont pass the Harding Test.
Make sure to check out Sissters debut album "There's a party in my mouth but you're not invited" out on Coraille or better yet, try to catch them on their coming European tour with Des Ark. They will be all over the place and you'll see how fantastic both bands are live.
Thanks to Sissters for allowing us to indulge them in our sometimes suspicious looking set ups and thanks to Lisa, Karl and Michael at SchwuZ for letting us turn one of their dancefloors into our makeshift studio for one afternoon.

He looked like he just came out of bed, he didn't mind being interviewed in the bathroom and he was calm and nice with his fans. Ed's a complete pro, having played hundreds of concerts in the last 3 years. And that's it.If you're into this music, he already has a huge back catalogue of currently 11 EPs and a sweet debut album titled "+".

I remember getting sent the first album and video by Mediengruppe Telekommander in 2004. Back then I just started working for the music program "Tracks" on arte tv and I immediately fell for their mixture of nasty beats and counter-polemic slogans.
Ironic, how almost a decade later Stefan Fähler and I directed, what is likely to be their last video ever.
To make a long story short, the band happened to see "Mis-Fortune Cookie", the result of a 24 hour movie challenge we took part in a few weeks ago. Since they had always wanted a Zombie-themed clip, they asked if we could do it. We reckoned we could, so we said yes.
For the shoot, we tried to call on as many teamsters from "Mis-Fortune Cookie", as well as recruiting fresh talent. This time, Aläcks Pin Heiro is not hidden behind monster make up, instead he's opening the clip and getting eaten. Bine Fez Buk kind of reprises her role as Marcia, sporting the golden flip-flops, her famous bath gown, yet with an admittedly slightly altered attitude.
Again, benefitting from our experiences with the 24 hour movie challenge, we were on a rather tight schedule. The first picture was shot on a Saturday right after midnight, the whole clip was finished a mere 2 and a half days later on Monday evening.
We really have to thank all the Zombies, bodies and helping hands behind the camera for making this a smooth ride. And we have to thank Mediengruppe Telekommander for the request to do a video like this.

I've been shooting some shorts for Radio Fritz in August.
On August 1, The Subways dropped by for interviews and this one ended up being a sideshow attraction at the 2011 New Music Award.
Although they are the nicest people, I'm always tongue tied around them, which is awful, because they're really nice and I always come across like an idiot and I wish I wouldn't, because they are totally sweet... Oh well, you get the point...
Two days later on August 3, I visited the preperations for the 2011 artbase, held at an abandoned tuberculosis clinic in the woods outside of Berlin. It was a great afternoon, taking a stroll through the ruins covered by the work of artists like 44 Flavors, Just and Alias, to name but a few....
You should definitely check it out if you get the chance, the exhibit is beautiful and permanent. There is the plan to turn the whole area into a kids academy. Go here to find out, what exactly that could mean...
Finally on August 29, I shot this little piece with German hip hop artist Marteria on the roof of the Admiralspalast in Berlin. After the 5 minute shoot, we nearly killed Marten's buddy Christoph who crashed with a makeshift staircase we made him walk down. Sorry...
The clip previewed Radio Fritz' own music festival "Die Neuen Deutschpoeten" showcasing only current German language music by the likes of Clueso, Bosse and many more... Marteria performed there in front of 13.000 people a few days later. After that, he was all over the tabloids, albeit for other reasons.... - Aug 07, 11
Together with Ivi Roberg, Stefan Fähler, Bine Fez Buk, Aläcks Pin Heiro, Yuky Ryang, Eric Ségol, Michael Kerscher, Michael Bauer and Stefano Graziano I took part in the 24 hour horror movie challenge "Scream or Die" by the guys from the "Another Country" book store in Berlin. We were assigned a location (a car boot / trunk) and a title (guess which). The film had to be written, shot, edited and uploaded within 24 hours.
It's a horror movie, so parental control is advised and I'm not going to spill the beans on the story. After all, it's only 3:12. Spooky.It's fair to say, that what you can see in the clip for "Future Noir" is pretty much what Stefan Fähler, São Paulo native Dácio Pinheiro and I brainstormed, having a beer after a beautiful day in the brazilian art park of Inhotim in March. Back then, Stefan was busy on the design of Hanin's album cover and press pictures and we thought, why not make a video, too?Dácio returned to Berlin for a few weeks in May - so we jumped at the opportunity and did it.Hanin was a real sweetheart, performing like there's no tomorrow for way longer than we anticipated in beatuiful dresses by Trés Bonjour. But instead of complaining, during breaks she even gave us some really recommendable shoulder massages - so there is no crazy diva shit to be spilled.What you hear in the video is the Tying Tiffany Remix of her classic "Future Noir" (2004) taken from her new album "Get it Back".It's actually the second video made for the new record. Also, check out Donovan Vim Crony's clip for "Do You Know!!!".Hanin will perform next at "Chauffer dans la Noirceur" festival in the french Normandie on July 14, 2011 alongside acts such as Public Enemy, Balkan Beat Box and Bonaparte. She'll hit the stage at around 11 p.m., which should work perfectly, no?Curious what it looks like when she performs the new stuff? In October 2010, one weekend after the shoot for the ESSENZ promo, I assisted Paulistas Dácio Pinheiro, Ivi Roberg and Alex Pinheiro at the shooting of the video for "Lucy" by brazilian hit makers Stop Play Moon.As you can tell by the pictures, it was a melancholic fall afternoon, the streets full of leaves and the winter air already approaching. Luzie Loose turned out to be a perfect protagonist for the clip, not only because she shares the name with the song, but because she is one hell of a dreamy biker.

In February Radio Fritz presented Robyn's gig at Astra in Berlin. So, because we like her, we inquired if her camp would be interested in a video to the song "Call Your Girlfriend" from her album "Body Talk", because there was a certain idea for it. Although they were already working on the official clip, they gave us the green light to shoot an alternative fan version.
In March we put out a casting call on Radio Fritz.
Searching for girls, who had their hair cut like Robyn to pose as her lookalikes. Also, we asked for girls who can get very upset very fast. Soon you will see why. A lot of girls sent in photos and videos. Going through them was great, because you could feel these girls really wanted to be in a video associated with Robyn. And yes, some were a little funny, too.
I mean, it takes a lot of courage to send recorded footage of yourself not knowing who will see it, right? Thanks to every girl who took the time!
I shot the video in April and May with the help of Alex Pinheiro, who was the rest of a proper team in one person. The girls let us into their homes, showed us their neighborhoods and were all, without exception, very easy to work with.
We traveled quite a bit for the girls who can get very upset very fast, but some of the lookalikes came a long way to be at their shooting in Berlin.
So, now it's done. In a few days we'll premiere our video at Radio Fritz, but when we do, you will find it above this post.

On May 7 actress Miriam Mayet ("Bedways") and I presented the award show at the 40th anniversary of the Sehsüchte Film Festival. We went through a total of 16 awards at the grand cinema room of the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen (HFF) Potsdam including honorable mentions, comments from the jury, film clips and, of course, thank you speeches by all the winners - all the while switching back and forth between German and English.
Naturally, we were afraid the show would go on forever. But thanks to the brilliant timing of the organizers, especially Anna Luise Kiss, we were done in a little over an hour, which we suppose was a delight to everyone awaiting the legendary closing party.

I have been pretty busy in the past weeks at Radio Fritz hosting the morning and sometimes afternoon shifts as well. And, of course, I have been busy working on the Essenz video "Vivat Entitas Okkulta". It's almost finished, we'll get to that very soon!
In the meantime, my friend Kaya asked me to do a shooting of her performing "Original" at Poser Music studios, where she recorded some new material. It's quite an emotional song, we spent some hours behind closed doors, only the two of us. Although we tried out various different angles and I edited a version with three cuts, she decided on this one shot and who can blame her?
The song is Kaya's very unique way of saying good-bye to a loved one, combining the tragic with the comic and doing so with charme and heart. - Jul 26, 11
Try to film a metal video in a hospital-like surrounding close to Berlin. You say Beelitz, I say what?!
Sure, we wanted to shoot the video for "Vivat Entitas Okkulta" the opening track from Essenz' fabulous new album "KVIITIIVZ – Beschwörung des Unaussprechlichen" in Beelitz Heilstätten at first - but the owners wanted an outrageous amount of money and they didn't even have any power supply in the buildings... Ugh. So we settled for the StadtGut Blankenfelde instead and we haven't regretted it one bit.
We filmed in the old building formely used as a hospital using projections, Super 8 cameras, strobes, complete doctors outfits and basically everything medical we could get our hands on to make this a worthy translation of the almost 10 minute long song.When I say "we" I don't only mean the band and I - indispensable help came from Brazilian filmmaker Dácio Pinheiro and German sound engineer Michael Kerscher working them Super 8 cameras and making sure I don't fuck up my own schedule. Also, we have to thank the StadtGut, especially Dieter Sommerfeldt for being such a a great help!I promise not to waste any time in getting the clip out - but it will take a while. - Jun 16, 12
On May 27, Madeleine Bloom was invited to the Watertower in Bernau, on the outkirts of Berlin. Only one concert is held there every year and the center stage of the tiny venue has been graced with legends like Tangerine Dream in the past.
A sold out event, a beautiful location and Madeleine made for a real memorable evening. I did my best to capture some of the magic with a 3 camera set up, despite having strained my wrist the evening before, pogo dancing with RP Kahl at the "Bedways" premiere at Volksbühne and thus wearing a bracer. I know, timing is everything...
Madeleine will release "Live at the Watertower" on October 15, featuring an audio part of 11 songs & 3 bonus songs from her Ivory Tower plus 4 exclusive videos of the songs "In Unison", "Zero Tolerance", "The Tide" & "A Little" from the gig edited by me. 50% of the proceeds go directly to a charity in Berlin that helps underprivileged children, so it's a win-win situation for everyone!

Who would have thought?! The coolest widely distibuted German music and popculture magazine has published a short review of the film - and they like it! Hooray!!
For those of you, unfamiliar with the German language, it says: "The documentary about the band's trip to France is a little gem filled with good music and great charme". What a swell opportunity to remind y'all: come to Freiluftkino Insel at Cassiopeia in Berlin-Friedrichshain, if you can - August 31, 8 p.m.!

Haywain Recordings is celebrating the release of the 12" split vinyl "The day will come tonight / Music for Simulator flights" by Berlin indie rock bands Château Laut and Jeanie Bueller, as well as the new album "Elegiac Stanzas" by Haywain recording artist Johnny3000.
At the event Johnny3000 will play, label head Stephan Laackman will preview photos from his "Citybirches Photography Works" and you'll get a sneak peek at the new field recording web series "Citystreet HiHat".
As suggested by the headline you'll also get a pre screening of the concert movie covering Damo Suzuki's Network with Château Laut, which took place April 30, 2010 at Ausland, Berlin.
